When is the best time to lay a new lawn in Sydney?
8 February 2026

If you're planning a new lawn in Sydney, the two best windows are September through mid-November, and again from mid-February through April. Warm soil, mild air, and rain closer to the surface — everything a new roll of turf needs to strike roots.
Mid-summer laying can work, but it's more watering, more stress, and more risk of the joins drying out before they knit. Mid-winter is the opposite problem — the roots don't move, so the lawn just sits there for months.
Before the turf goes down, we cultivate the base 100mm, add gypsum where the clay demands it, and screed a fresh sandy loam top dress. Fresh-cut turf is laid within 24 hours of supply, joints staggered, edges tucked in, and watered deeply that afternoon.
First mow at four weeks with the blades set high. Full traffic — kids, dogs, entertaining — from about six weeks. If you want us to handle it end-to-end, we'll book you into the right season.
